This can be positive - see call to orbit, which increases arousal and creates greater attraction in both animals and humans - or it can be negative - see animals, which causes deterrence and repulsion.

In the animal kingdom, this behavior has evolved primarily to deter other species and to protect a selected partner. In our evening we can be sure that the same scent has different effects on different people, someone we like and someone we don't like. So if you think about it, a pleasant smell can have such a strong influence on mate choice that it is almost unconscious and we can detect it at any time.
